Oppo India

The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Edition set a high bar for smartphone zoom, boasting a similar periscope zoom camera as the Huawei P30 Pro. Oppo thinks there’s plenty of room for improvement though, as it’s just confirmed that it’ll launch the Oppo Reno 2 series on August 28.

Oppo confirmed the new release on Twitter today, noting that the device will offer 20x zoom and quad rear cameras. The post also shows that the unique Sharkfin pop-up for the selfie camera will make an appearance once again.

It’s unclear whether the Oppo Reno 2’s 20x zoom will be of the hybrid, digital, or periscope variety. We’re leaning towards the former, as the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Edition offered a 6x periscope camera, 10x hybrid zoom, and 60x digital zoom. So it would be weird if the follow-up model offers 20x digital zoom, while the older model has a higher digital zoom factor.

Oppo Reno 10x Zoom Edition review: A serious Huawei P30 Pro rival

It’s easy to say smartphones have more or less become the same. This is often true, but Oppo has continually been able to reinvent the wheel in fresh and exciting ways. The Oppo Reno 10x …

The Chinese brand will still have a big challenge on its hands if it hopes to deliver 20x hybrid zoom. A high level of hybrid zoom requires a high level of native zoom functionality to begin with, as well as great image processing smarts. So don’t be surprised if the periscope camera also receives an upgrade.

The post confirms that the Oppo Reno 2 series will launch in India first, but hopefully the phone receives a much wider release like the first device.

We don’t have any quad camera details either, but hopefully it follows the 10x Zoom Edition’s lead by offering standard and ultra-wide cameras too. We’ve also seen depth sensors and macro cameras being used as the fourth camera in quad camera setups, so this isn’t out of the question for Oppo.

If the Oppo Reno 2 series is anything like the original Oppo Reno series, then we can expect a flagship model and an upper mid-range variant (with pricing to fit). What do you make of the Oppo Reno 2 series? Let us know below!
